Scholarship opportunities

One way to make studying in Wales more accessible is through scholarships. Encourage your students to explore scholarships like those offered by Chevening, Fulbright, and Gilman. We also offer the Global Wales Postgraduate Scholarship worth up to £10,000. These opportunities can significantly reduce the financial burden of studying abroad.

Diverse culture

Studying in Wales is not just about academia; it's also about cultural experiences. We are known for our welcoming and friendly atmosphere. International students often find it easy to integrate into Welsh society and make lifelong friends. Encourage your students to embrace the unique Welsh culture, from our rich history to our vibrant arts scene.

Welsh university campuses are proud of their diversity; they welcome students from all over the world and hold celebrations throughout the year to mark national, ethnic, and religious festivals so everyone can feel included and at home.

Breathtaking landscapes

Wales boasts some of the most stunning natural landscapes in the UK. From the rugged mountains of Snowdonia to the beautiful coastline along the Gower Peninsula (the UK’s first designated area of outstanding natural beauty), your students will have countless opportunities for outdoor adventures. Studying here allows for a perfect blend of academic pursuits and outdoor exploration.

Supportive services

Welsh universities take mental health seriously, as part of ensuring international students have a positive academic and personal experience. Universities offer comprehensive support services, including orientation programs, academic support, and career guidance. This extensive support network can make the transition to studying abroad smoother for your students.

Visa and immigration

Many universities have dedicated international offices to assist with visa-related queries. Please ensure your students are aware of the UK's visa and immigration requirements and it is good practise to start the visa application process well in advance of their intended start date.

We have some extra information about visas here, but would recommend students contact their university of choice directly.

Cost of living

Wales generally has a more affordable cost of living than other parts of the UK. Help your students budget for their studies by considering factors like tuition fees, accommodation, and daily expenses.

It is also worth considering the cost of courses which can var between subjects and requirements to buy course materials such as text books.

International student tuition fees vary between institutions, so it would be advisable to check each university’s website for course fees.

Healthcare

International students in Wales are eligible for National Health Service (NHS) healthcare services.

If your students require a visa to study in the UK, as part of the application they will pay an Immigration Health Surcharge to gain access to the NHS. It costs £470 per year for a student and allows the student to access a doctor for any physical or mental health issue, accident and emergency services, and sexual health services.

As students have access to the NHS in the UK, they do not need private medical insurance during your studies, unless they are studying a course that lasts less than six months and therefore they are not required to have a student visa.

Shortly after arriving in the UK, it is recommended that students register with a GP (general practitioner), a doctor who deals with most general health problems, so that medical assistance is easily accessible. Most GP surgeries accommodate patients’ requests to see a doctor of a specific gender, if it makes you feel more comfortable.

Career opportunities

Welsh universities offer excellent prospects beyond study. Encourage your students to explore work opportunities during or after their studies, as many Welsh universities have strong connections with local industries and offer internships or work experience placements as part of their studies.
